Hoover Plantation has a history. Hunters have frequented this beautiful place since the eighteen hundreds. At one time twenty-seven families lived here and sharecropped the land. The small fields and farming techniques in those days made for excellent quail hunting. In 1940 Hoover was purchased by Marshall Field, an avid bird hunter, and added to his Chelsea Plantation. Hoover was later sold to the Milbank family at Turkey Hill Plantation and in 1988 was purchased by its present owners, who improved a place that was already one of the best.
Today the plantation has miles of roads and trails that run through quail woods with longleaf pines and live oaks. There are duck ponds, quail patches, and dove fields. Some areas contain woodlands with heavier timber where there are plenty of deer and turkeys.

The main single improvement made by the present owners is a lovely main house designed by neoclassical architect Randolph Martz of Charleston. Like the land at Hoover the house is a work of art with high ceilings and heart pine floors. It is elegant and spacious, yet functional with attention to detail everywhere. Wainscoting and doors are made of ancient cypress taken from the plantation. The floor on the ground level is slate. The roof on the house is copper. There is an elevator, a walk-in cooler, and a walk-in vault. The house is very livable and even the gunroom is a charming place to be.
Hoover Plantation is located in a conservation area called the Savannah River preserve that runs along the Savannah River from Georgia into South Carolina. Many plantations in the area including Hoover are protected by conservations easements that allow for use such as farming, timbering and hunting, yet deters development. This preservation effort has been rapid and bodes well for the area’s future as a pristine and beautiful place for people and wildlife. Hoover is forty-five minutes from Savannah, an hour from Hilton Head and ten minutes from the town of Ridgeland.
